Adoption Guidelines

Arkansas Law requires that step-parents follow certain procedures to adopt a step-child. The child’s biological parent must ordinarily consent to the adoption unless that parent has failed significantly for one year to support the child or communicate with the child. If that’s the case, the step-parent may be able to adopt the child without the biological parent’s consent if the court finds it to be in the child’s best interest.
